The 30 largest sugar exporters in Brazil

Categories :

Below is an important report on the 30 largest sugar exporters in 2019 – ranking of companies and evolution.

Although Brazilian sugar production in 2019 recorded a slight recovery compared to 2018, it remains below the volumes seen in previous harvests. While in 2017 38.09 million tons of the commodity were produced, in the following year the volume dropped to 28.50 million. In 2019, the amount rose slightly, to 29.96 million tons. The data are from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa).

Logically, exports follow this bearish scenario. In the first half of 2019, when compared to the same period of the previous year, exports fell by 17.28%. In the annual comparison between 2018 and 2019, the drop was less pronounced, at 12.59%, representing a resumption of exports during the second half of last year.

According to data from the Ministry of Economy, Brazil recorded the lowest volume exported of the commodity of the decade, with a total of 18.04 million

tons, in 2019.

In addition, the country also recorded the lowest annual volume of sugar exported via the hold of a ship since the beginning of Williams Brasil’s historical series in 2011: 16.32 million tons of sugar.

Volume of sugar exported annually

It is worth remembering that the volumes exposed by the Ministry of Economy are always higher than those of Williams Brasil, since the data collection methodology is different. In addition, the maritime agency only counts exports per ship’s hold.

According to the managing partner of Job Economia, Júlio Maria Borges, Brazil “goes back 12 years in terms of sugar exports”. For him, this means that, in recent years, fuel ethanol has been the best option for using the plants.

Although the volume has registered major changes in recent years, the same selling mills remain firmly in the top positions of the ranking.

For the sixth consecutive year, Raízen is at the forefront of sugar exporting companies. There were 2.13 million tons shipped during the year, an increase of 1.53% compared to the 2.09 million tons exported in 2018. The volume corresponds to 13.05% of the total exported by the country in the year.

In the semi-annual analysis carried out by novaCana, the company had already increased its exports by 7.1% compared to the same period a year earlier.

The second place also showed maintenance: Copersucar shipped 1.42 million tons of the sweetener, a volume 14.1% lower compared to the previous year.

Since the beginning of the historical series, in 2011, the two giants of the sector alternate the first places in the ranking, however, Raízen has been in the

lead since 2013.

The third place in the ranking, in 2019, was Biosev, with a volume of 945.24 thousand tons. The amount represented a decrease of 21.06% in the annual comparison. Still, the company rose one position compared to 2018. Since 2015, the company’s volumes exceeded one million tons, which did not happen in 2019.

São Martinho ranked fourth in the analysis, having exported 882.09 thousand tons of the sweetener. As a result, the company gained two positions compared to 2018, when it shipped 2.14% less.

The fifth place went to Santa Terezinha, for having exported 810.56 thousand tons. The company dropped two positions thanks to a 37% lower volume compared to 2018.

Five largest sugar exporters in Brazil

In the ups and downs of the ranking, three companies stood out for increasing their exports by more than 100% compared to the previous year: Louis Dreyfus (+425.87%), Czarnikow (+166.80%) and Bunge (+114, 76%).

With this result, Louis Dreyfus rose from the 62nd position to the 18th. Czarnikow rose from 45th to 19th, and Bunge, from 36th to 20th.

Even with the improvement in exports, Louis Dreyfus has been facing difficulties. The company launched, in November last year, a plan to cut costs and reorganize the business on account of the financial difficulties it faces in the world.

Sugar leaves Brazil through five main ports: Santos, Paranaguá, Maceió, Recife and Suape. In 2019, according to Williams Brasil, most of the shipments were through Santos, totaling 12.51 million tons. The volume is 13.05% lower than that recorded a year earlier.

From the port of Paranaguá, the second with the highest volumes of output, 2.67 million tons of the commodity were shipped, or 15.76% less than in 2018. Maceió, Recife and Suape, on the other hand, had lower volumes: 858.6 thousand, 179.89 thousand and 98.15 thousand tons, respectively.

Of the total shipped by national ports, 1.57 million tons were destined for Algeria, another 1.54 million for Nigeria and 794,150 for Bangladesh. A year earlier, Algeria was also the main destination, but Iraq followed soon after and Nigeria, in third.

In 2019, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and China acquired, respectively: 785.90 thousand, 739.13 thousand and 712.07 thousand tons. Despite this, the destination of an even greater volume, of 6.37 million tons, was not informed.
