The largest sugar manufacturers in Brazil

São Paulo is the Brazilian state that concentrates the largest sugar production. The São Martinho Group is a Brazilian group that is among the largest sugar-energy groups, with an approximate crushing capacity of 24 million tons of sugarcane. It has four plants in operation: São Martinho, in Pradópolis, in the metropolitan region of Ribeirão Preto (SP);

São Martinho processes its own cane, partners and suppliers from an area of 135 thousand hectares around its headquarters, the equivalent of almost 190 thousand soccer fields.


Manufactory Raízen Energia

The main manufacturer of sugarcane ethanol in Brazil and the largest individual exporter of cane sugar in the international market, Raízen emerged as a joint venture between Cosan and Shell do Brasil. It is responsible for the production of about 2.5 billion liters of sugar cane ethanol per year, destined for the domestic and foreign markets. In addition to biofuel, the current 26 units produce 73 million tons of sugar annually and have 1 gigawatt of installed capacity to produce electricity from sugarcane bagasse. In the fuel area, the company sells 25 billion liters to the transport and industry segments through its 65 distribution terminals, in addition to supplying its network of 7 thousand service stations under the Shell brand and 66 airports. Raízen employs more than 30 thousand employees.


Manufactory Coopersucar

It is the largest Brazilian cooperative and has a unique business model in the sugar-energy sector, which includes all links in the sugar and ethanol chain, from monitoring the harvest in the field to the final markets, including storage, transportation and marketing. In the last crop year, it produced 3.7 million tons of sugar – 1.9 million were exported and 1.8 million were sold domestically. Ethanol production was also significant, with 5 billion liters sold. Of this total, 4.7 billion were destined for the domestic market. Since 2012, Copersucar has had a stake in the capital of trading company Eco-Energy, which in the most recent crop year handled 9.2 billion liters of ethanol, mainly in the American market.

Brazilian sugar exports breaks record in 2020, with 30.8 million tons

Over the 12 months of 2020, 30.79 million tons of sugar were traded – the highest value in the historical series started in 2009. In comparison with 2019, for example, the amount represents a growth of 72.1%.

Considering the type of sugar exported, most of the amount handled in 2020 is raw, with 26.83 million tons at an average price of US $ 276.17 / t. White sugar, on the other hand, totaled 3.96 million tons.
